I have the honour to enclose for
Your Lordship's information a Medical Certificate granted by the Colonial Surgeon, setting forth the necessity for the removal of the Honorable W. J. Caine, Clerk of the Works and Civil Engineer, from this Colony;
and being satisfied that his immediate departure is absolutely necessary to save his life, I have this day in Council granted that gentleman leave of absence for twelve
months
commencing from the 29th instant, the date on which he will quit Hongkong.
In
my Despatch marked separate of the 27th December, 1848, I have reported.
